Brief Summary in Lay Language

The PEKo continuation project (PEKo 1.1) follows on from the previous PEKo violence prevention project in the setting of inpatient care for the elderly. On the one hand, it focuses on the further support of the facilities already participating in the project and, on the other hand, on the training and subsequent support for the independent implementation of the project of new interested facilities on the basis of a created manual. This is based on the findings, results and experiences of the original project and other external sources of evidence.

The aim of PEKo 1.1 is to develop measures to prevent and deal with violence in the participating inpatient geriatric care facilities, and to subsequently integrate and evaluate these measures in everyday work.

One instrument to support this process is the PEKo module manual, which contains background information on the topic as well as a catalogue of measures including instructions for action. The principle of participatory intervention development is maintained in a reduced form. Participating institutions are to be motivated as far as possible to work independently with the module manual. At the same time, the responsible study centres are available as contact points in case of problems, questions or need for support.

Brief Summary in Scientific Language

The follow-up project PEKo 1.1 in the setting of inpatient care for the elderly follows on from the previous violence prevention project PEKo (Participatory Development and Evaluation of a Multimodal Concept for Violence Prevention in Inpatient Care Facilities).
The project contains two different components:
• Participating facilities from the original project are offered follow-up support by the study centres. This is intended to support the facilities in the completion and long-term implementation of prevention concepts and interventions that have already been developed.
• Based on the results and experiences of PEKo as well as current scientific findings, a module manual is being developed, the feasibility of which is being tested with newly recruited inpatient care facilities. With the PEKo module manual, the participating geriatric care facilities are to be enabled to develop a concept and measures for violence prevention for their facility mostly on their own. The study centres support the facilities at the beginning with training on how to use the module manual and advise them in the course of the project. The implementation is scientifically evaluated.
