Brief Summary in Lay Language
What does it take so that patients can arrive safely at group therapy treatment?
How do patients experience the first units in group psychotherapy? What does it depend on (with regard to the patient, the therapist and the treatment) wheter a therapeutic alliance will develop with the therapist and the group?
We address these questions in a multimodal and method-pluralistic study using interviews, group discussions and the evaluation of data from the database of the psychotherapeutic ambulance.
Brief Summary in Scientific Language
The initial phase in the process of group psychotherapy is of great importance for successful treatment. This particularly applies to the promotion of group cohesion and the establishment of a therapeutic working alliance in the group. A deeper understanding of the possible dropout of patients in this phase of the psychotherapy process is important both for the setting-specific design of the therapy and for the psychotherapeutic approach in therapeutic treatment. This field is currently comparatively sparsely researched and defined inconsistently.
Based on more than 1500 retrospective case data from the ÖAGG psychotherapeutic outpatient clinic (PTA), the pilot study is dedicated to the initial phase in group psychotherapy. After the first 10 sessions, patients leave the group therapy setting much less frequently. It can therefore be assumed that the therapeutic relationships are established in these first sessions.
The aim of the study is a first reconstruction of the circumstances of patients leaving the group within this critical time window.
First, over 2500 cases of the database are analyzed quantitatively in retrospect using disorder-specific factors, socio-economic data and treatment-specific parameters and evaluated with regard to possible risk and protection constellations for successful treatment.
A deep hermeneutic and documentary interpretation of group discussions with participating psychotherapists on the one hand and telephone interviews with participating patients on the other hand provide qualitative insights into the phase in question. This brings in the perspective of the patient as well as that of the therapist.
Do you plan to share individual participant data with other researchers?
