Brief Summary in Lay Language

Although eating behaviour is influenced by a variety of motives, when aiming to change eating behaviour the focus is often laid on health and weight control motives, supporting a view of food as health. Dietary guidelines based on this view usually consist of complex, normative, and restrictive rules that are difficult to put into practice for lay persons. In contrast, the present intervention study aims to investigate a simple rule for food choice (“Eat colourful”) to facilitate healthy eating. Using a smartphone app, participants will be prompted to eat a colourful meal. In addition, the meal consumed for lunch will be recorded.

Interventions/Observational Groups

  •   Assessment of food intake via photo- and event-based 'Ecological Momentary Assessment' (EMA; Stone & Shiffman, 1994). After one baseline week, participants enter a one week intervention phase in which they receive a daily promt on their smartphone ('Ecological Momentary Intervention', Heron & Smyth, 2010). The prompt is sent at participants' individual lunch time, which they will set prior to the baseline week (Nahum-Shani et al., 2015). Afterwards, a one week follow-up is conducted using EMA.
