Brief Summary in Lay Language

Several survery showed that complementary medicine is widely used in the German population. The Academic Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine (AZKIM) at the University Clinics of Freiburg, Heidelberg, Tübingen and Ulm has been funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of Baden-Wuerttemberg to provide university-based research and patient care with proven effective methods Complementary medicine.
Therefore, attitudes and needs regarding complementary medicine at the four university hospitals in Baden-Württemberg should be inquired among patients and medical staff.
It is planned to interview patients from different departments (such as gynecology and various subdivision of internal medicine) with a paper questionnaire. Nurses and physicians should be interviewed by an online questionnaire. The data is then anonymized and evaluated. A comparison of different locations is planned.

Brief Summary in Scientific Language

Background:
Complementary medicine is broadly used in the German population. Therefore, the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg founded an Academic Center Complementary and Integrative Medicine (AZKIM) at the university hospitals of Freiburg, Heidelberg, Tübingen and Ulm to the university to improve research and patient care with proven effective methods of complementary medicine.
In this context, attitude and demand on complementary medicine of patients and medical staff at the four locations will be evaluated by a questionaire;
Primary question: Survey of the attitude and the subjective demand on complementary medicine
Secondary question: Comparison of the results between the four locations; Comparison with data from outpatients (data from the KOKON study); Comparison over time (results with
a similar survey of 1999); Evaluation of knowledge about complementary medicine;
Study design:
Multi-center, anonymized survey study, paper-based (patient) and online-based
(Nursing and medical service);
Study participants:
To be included in the study
a. 50 consecutive inpatients in the departments of gastroenterology, gynecology,
Cardiology, Oncology and Rheumatology of the four sites (n total = 1,000, n per
Location = 250)
b. All nurses of the four university hospitals
c. All physicians of the four university clinics in this respect they are active in patient care
are;
Study Procedure:
Ad Patients: Consecutive survey of all patients of the respective departments
Ad Nurse: Online survey using standardized questionnaires (via online
Survey software (www.unipark.com). All nurses at all four locations receive a link to the survey and can participate in it anonymously.
Ad Doctors: Online survey using standardized questionnaires (via online survey software
(www.unipark.com). All doctors at the four locations receive a link via a mailing list
to the survey and can participate anonymously in this.
