Brief Summary in Lay Language

Stress is a risk factor for the development of depressive disorders. People differ regarding their ability to cope with stressors. This study aims to identify factors, which apply to better or worse stress coping (sense of coherence, self-directed aggression). Therefore, students will participate in an online survey at three measuring points (at the beginning of their study, before and after an exam phase).

Brief Summary in Scientific Language

Stress is a risk factor for the development of depressive disorders. Therefore, an empirical basis for the development of preventive interventions targeting depression is the identification of resilience and vulnerability factors for the emergence of stress-induced depression. A previous study showed that passive self-directed aggressive behaviour is such a vulnerability factor. An established resilience factor for maintaining psychological health after stressful live events is sense of coherence. This longitudinal study aims to test a moderation effect between stress and passive self-directed aggression/sense of coherence for the prediction of depressive symptoms. Therefore, students will participate in an online survey at three measuring points (at the beginning of their study, before and after an exam phase).

Interventions/Observational Groups

  •   This study aims to identify factors, which apply to better or worse stress coping (sense of coherence, self-directed aggression). Therefore, students will participate in an online survey at three measuring points (at the beginning of their study, before and after an exam phase). The interaction between stress, passive aggression, sense of coherence and depressive symptoms will be analysed both cross-sectional and longitudinal.
