Brief Summary in Lay Language

The aim of this study is to examine how satisfied adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years are with their rehabilitation and which factors predict the satisfaction as well as a premature discontinuation of treatment. The scientific literature shows that the treatment satisfaction of adults is dependent from several aspects, for example the attitude of a person towards its illness or how good the treatment expectations are fulfilled. However, for children and adolescents there ist insufficient knowledge about these factors. Therefore, this study addresses this question. In a first qualitative part of the study, twelve adolescents are interviewed face-to-face. Based on these results a questionnaire for assessing the patients’ rehabilitation treatment representations will be developed. This questionnaire will be applied together with other questionnaires in a survey with 220 adolescents. The survey will be performed prior to rehabilitation, two weeks after starting rehabilitation and at the end of rehabilitation. Additionally, the parents of participating adolescents will be asked for the family history and their own expectations on the rehabilitation of their child. Parents will be asked to fulfill the questionnaire once before the rehabilitation of their child starts. At the end measures should be developed that lead to a higher satisfaction of adolescents with their rehabilitation and reduce the risk of treatment termination.

Brief Summary in Scientific Language

The medical rehabilitation of children and adolescents is important in the overall context of medical care of children and adolescents with chronic illness. Data of the quality management of the German pension fund show that the satisfaction of children and adolescents with their rehabilitation is high altogether. However there is - besides other challenges, for example a decreasing number of applications - always a significant number of adolescents that is dissatisfied with the rehabilitation and even discontinue before completion. That may lead to negative treatment outcomes as well as to organisational problems and economic disadvantages for the clinic. There is little knowledge about the factors that influence the patient satisfaction and the termination of rehabilitation treatment in the context of children and adolescents rehabilitation. Results from adults suggest that (un)fulfilled expectations may be important predictors of patient satisfaction. Aim of the study is to identify factors that influence the satisfaction of adolescents or lead to a premature discontinuation of rehabilitation. In addition to sociodemographic factors and factors which are related to the illness itself we want to focus psychological variables (illness representations and rehabilitation treatment representations) as potential predictors. First, face-to-face interviews will be performed with twelve adolescents. Based on the results of the qualitative study we develop a questionnaire which asks for the rehabilitation treatment representations. Afterwards, five adolescents should complete the new developed questionnaire and report how comprehensible it is. If it is necessary the questionnaire will be revised. Then, the questionnaire will be used in a survey with 220 adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years together with a number of other questionnaires. The rehabilitants will be asked to complete the survey before rehabilitation starts, two weeks after beginning and at the end of rehabilitation. Adolescents who abandon their treatment get a further questionnaire which asks for the reasons for termination. The parents of participating adolescents will also be surveyed once before rehabilitation starts (N=220 parents). They will be asked for the family history and their own expectations on the rehabilitation of their child.
Based on the results of the project specific measures which can increase the satisfaction of adolescents with the rehabilitation and reduce the risk of premature discontinuation of treatment should be developed.
