Brief Summary in Lay Language
"Augmented reality" (AR) means the addition virtual objects or information to real perception. In the last years the expansion of this technology has been remarkable and in recent pilot projects the potential for applications in the field of medicine and also in the field of medical science has been presented. The presented project uses Augmented Reality technology to impart practical skills in order to evaluate the efficiency and acceptance of this technology in medical students. Within the framework of the current curriculum the students of the urological general practice training are instructed by a nursing staff member of urology in the set-up of a bladder catheter. In the presented research project the participants are now randomized to 2 groups and one group receives the instructions for the bladder catheter set-up via an interactive AR system instead a nursing staff member. A systematic evaluation of the acceptance of the AR technology by the medical students as well as an evaluation of the effectiveness of AR as a medium for communicating practical skills is to be carried out by self-evaluation by means of standardized questionnaires before and after completion of the course, as well as by a standardized inspection of the practical skills.
Brief Summary in Scientific Language
As part of the urological general practice training, the study is briefly presented to the students at the beginning. All test persons who have agreed in written form will be randomized into 2 groups. One group is instructed by a nursing staff member of urology in the setup of a bladder endurance catheter on the model, the second group is instructed by an interactive augmented reality system. Before and after instruction, a standardized questionnaire is completed. At the end of the general practice training, all participants demonstrate the implementation of the bladder permanent catheter system on the model. They are evaluated anonymously by an independent, blinded examiner according to objective, predetermined criteria. The collected data are statistically evaluated.
