Brief Summary in Lay Language

Gambling Disorder has massive consequences for the affected individual and its relatives and often is associated with substance-related disorders.
The Internet-based intervention "Check dein Spiel" (CDS) provides structured therapist-guided support for individuals with gambling disorder. Aim of the program is to help people to reach gambling abstinence. CDS consists of several interactive treatment modules, up to 2 one-to-one chats with a qualified therapist and up to 7 weekly feedbacks on one's entries in the interactive modules.

In the study, we want to find out how effective the program is compared to other and no treatment. Therefore, all participants of the trial are randomly assigned to either [a] the program, [b] e-mail counselling conducted by the same therapists or [c] waitlist. Individuals assigned to the waitlist have to wait for 3 months until they can use the program. They are encouraged to make use of traditional support, e.g. local addiction counselling centres.

After 3, 6 and 12 months, participants are requested to take part at the follow-up surveys. All surveys are conducted online. It takes 15-20 min to complete each follow-up questionnaire.

The study ends after the follow up after 12 months.

Interventions/Observational Groups

  •   Internet-based intervention "Check dein Spiel" (CDS), a 7-week therapist-guided support for individuals with gambling disorder.
Aim of the program is to help people to reach gambling abstinence.
The program starts with a 50-min one-to-one chat with the counsellor. After the initial chat, the clients’ account is activated. The login area consists of an online-diary and several working modules. Those deal with relapse prevention, the improvement of life quality, re-establishing a daily structure, elaborating the advantages and disadvantages of gambling and getting an overview of the debts. Each week, clients receive a detailed feedback from the counselor.
After the duration of 7 weeks, client and counsellor meet again for a concluding chat (approx. 30 min).
  •   E-mail based support for individuals with gambling disorder for up to 7 weeks. Counselling is provided by the same staff as the intervention (trial arm 1) In contrast to the intervention, e-mail based counselling does not consist of an interactive diary and working modules. Thus, e-mail counselling is less structured and more flexible.
Aim of the e-mail counselling is to reach gambling abstinence.
  •   Participants in this trial arm can use the Internet-based intervention CDS (cf. trial arm 1) after a waiting period of 3 months. Meanwhile they are free to use traditional support offers, e.g. local addiction counselling centers or medical treatment.
