Brief Summary in Scientific Language

Patients suffering from attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) show impaired sleep-dependent consolidation of declarative memory. In this study, we investigate the role of neuronal processes during encoding for the subsequent sleep-dependent consolidation in ADHS. Patients and controls encode emotionally negative vs. neutral pictures before a wake vs. sleep condition. After the retention interval, old pictures are presented mixed with new distractors. The recognition accuracy is used as a measure of memory performance. During encoding, an event-related fMRI and event-related EEG potentials are recorded. We expect impaired sleep-dependent memory in ADHD-patients and differences in the subsequent memory effect seen in fMRI and EEG.
We hope that the investigation of neuronal processes during encoding will help to understand deficient sleep-dependent memory in ADHD.

Interventions/Observational Groups

  •   Unmedicated Patients encode emotionally negative vs. neutral pictures before a wake vs. sleep condition. After the retention interval, old pictures are presented mixed with new distractors.     No intervention is planned.

Patients: ADHD diagnosis (ICD-10 F90.* und F98.8).
Healthy controls: no psychiatric diagnosis.

brain damage or neurological diseases, IQ below 85, amnesia, sleep disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depressive episode, oppressive-compulsive disorder, substance dependence (addiction), suicidal tendency
