Brief Summary in Lay Language

Phobic postural vertigo (PPV), a subtype of functional dizziness, is characterized by a dissociation of subjective postural instability and objectively maintained balance capabilities. This dissociation has been shown to manifest in an inadequate strategy of balance regulation. This study aims to examine the influence of attention on inadequate balance control in PPV.

Postural performance will be assessed by center-of-pressure displacements and surface EMG of lower limb muscles (tibialis anterior and soleus) in patients with PPV and healthy controls during 4 stance conditions: standing with eyes open or closed and with or without additional cognitive dual task. The level of muscle co-contraction and the characteristics of open- and closed-loop postural control will be analyzed.

The experimental procedures are in accordance with an amendment (positive vote from the 6.4.2016) to the ethical approval for the study: "Untersuchungen der Mobilität und Aktivität von Patienten mit Schwindel- und Gleichgewichtserkrankungen (project number: 421-13).
