Brief Summary in Lay Language

This study aims to evaluate the quality of an instrument which assess patients´participation in nursing handover, when the handover is taking part at the bedside. This is important, because patients being involved in nursing handover feel more informed about their condition and their care and more involved in the decision-making process about their nursing care. There also more satisfied with the handover process. It is possible to adapt the nursing handover process after assessing patients´ participation in nursing handover with a valid and reliable instrument.
The instrument will be administered to 450 patients to assess validity and reliability of the instrument.

Brief Summary in Scientific Language

Nursing bedside-handover is an often used measure for shared decision-making in nursing care. Numerous studies have demonstrated the benefit of nursing bedside-handover. These studies have used qualitative (interviews) and quantitative design (questionnaires). However, the used questionnaires were not sufficiently assessed for validity and reliability. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess validity and reliability of a self-reported questionnaire measuring patients´ perception of being involved in nursing bedside-handover.
The questionnaire will be distributed to 450 patients in three hospitals 1-2 days before discharge. The following psychometric properties will be assessed: construct validity (exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, known-groups-validity), criterion validity and internal consistency.

Interventions/Observational Groups

  •   Patient with different diseases with a hospital stay of more than three days. One to two days before discharge patient will be asked to fill out the questionnaire. They will be asked to return the questionnaire to a defined person. The questionnaire assess patient´s attitude towards nursing bedside-handover and Patient´s perception of being involved in nursing bedside-handover.
