Brief Summary in Lay Language

In this research we collect data helping to improve the treatment of children with ADHD and their families. We investigate if children with and without ADHD differ in terms of emotion recognition abilities and if there are differences concerning attachment behavior in these children or their parents.

Brief Summary in Scientific Language

This study will investigate attachment representations and emotion recognition abilities of 5 to 10-year old children with- and without ADHD. It is hypothesized that the quality of attachment of the child relates to its emotion recognition abilities. The study design will allow some clarification on what generally determines emotion recognition abilities in children with and without ADHD. Parental attachment representations are included as additional explanatory factors. We compare 80 children (5 to 10 years old) with a secured ADHD diagnosis requiring outpatient, residential or semi-residential treatment in a child- and adolescent psychiatric facility to a control group of 80 healthy children of equivalent age, including their families. Our variables include attachment representation inventories as well as additional psychometric inventories. This research has a meaningful impact on the development of therapeutic interventions for families with ADHD.

Interventions/Observational Groups

  •   Our project requires three appointments of data collection. In case of the clinical sample the data collection is embedded in the treatment of the children. After having informed the children and parents thoroughly and having received written consensus from both parties, we will conduct an appointment with the parents. The parents will be asked questions concerning their general living situation and will be handed several questionnaires providing opportunity to assess their children’s symptoms as well as their own emotional stress. Further, we will assess attachment representations of both parents using age-appropriate inventories. The first appointment requires about 75 minutes of time.
In a first appointment with the child, the child participates in a computer test assessing abilities to correctly identify emotions. We also administer questionnaires assessing the child’s symptoms from its own perspective. The appointment requires about 60 minutes of time.
In a second appointment with the child we will also administer an age-appropriate inventory to assess the child’s attachment representation (GEV-B). The appointment requires about 30 minutes of time. If there hasn’t been conducted a test of general intelligence beforehand, we will conduct one or plan to conduct one within a third appointment which would last about 60 minutes. Presence of the parents is not required in the child’s appointments.

Secondary Outcome

A secondary goal was to assess differences in emotion recognition in different tasks, i.e. the DANVA2 tasks, and within a newly developed task, which, based on DANVA2 material, assessed emotion recognition of adult faces within a context of other emotional stimuli, i.e. emotional gestures.
