Brief Summary in Lay Language

We analyze which medical and organizational factors are associated with the nurses‘ workload. Concerning neonatal intensive care units, we are particularly interested in the type of ventilation support. It is our objective to study whether perceived workload and actual work effort depend on the type of ventilation support and whether there is variation depending on the patient’s age.

Brief Summary in Scientific Language

We analyze which medical and organizational factors are associated with the nurses‘ workload. Concerning neonatal intensive care units, we are particularly interested in the type of ventilation support. Advocates of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) not only list the improvements in medical outcomes but also presume that nCPAP is associated with less workload. Yet, observations and clinical experiences partly assume that nCPAP is in fact associated with higher workload. It is therefore our objective to study whether perceived workload and actual work effort depend on the type of ventilation support and whether there is variation depending on the patient’s age. Relying on a diary design, we gather data in terms of temporal work effort, perceived workload, patient-related medical parameters and organizational parameters. The results should allow us to work on implications that improve organizational structures and processes in the interests of medical professionals and patients.

Interventions/Observational Groups

  •   Nurses at the NICU, who care for premature babies (less than 1.500 g and/or born before 32. gestation week), are observed and different care activities and associated work effort is gathered. In addition, their perceived workload is gathered by means of a standardized questionnaire.

Primary Outcome

Work effort is gathered via activity sampling technique over a period of 60-80 days. All activities will be observed and temporally ascertained during fixed time intervals.

start of 1:1-Block secondary endpoint

Secondary Outcome

Perceived workload is gathered via diary design including a written questionnaire.
The questionnaire is based upon the factor "Perceived work intensity" of the FIT-questionnaire (Richter/Hemmann/Merboth/Fritz/Hansgen/Rudolf).
For each day during the collection period (60-80 days), nurses will respond to the questions at the end of their shift.
