Brief Summary in Lay Language

A qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with adult patients is conducted to explore the incentives of the utilization of Emergency Departments.

In recent years, the increasing use of Emergency Departments has lead to crowding, which may cause a decreasing quality of medical treatment. One known cause of crowding is the increasing demand for nonurgent medical care instead of emergency medical aid. One third of Emergency Department patients at the Charité Berlin is admitted due to nonurgent medical need categories (Manchester Triage Level).

The study aims to identify the attitudes towards treatment of nonurgent medical needs in Emergency Departments on the individual patient's level.

The results will lead to hypotheses, which will built the empirical base for further research with quantitative methodologies. Thereafter, interventions will be developed to accomodate the structures of Emergency Departments to the changing patient needs.

Interventions/Observational Groups

  •   Participants will be recruited during their stay in the Emergency Department. Following informed consent, an appointment will be made for an interview to be held within one week. The interview will be conducted in an office in the Emergency Department, and in exceptional cases via telephone. The semi-structured interview will include the following topics:
Regular binding to a General Practioner
    Confidence in outpatient treatment
    Confidence in Emergency Department treatment
Behaviour in case of physical discomfort
    Time-constraints in everyday-life

Recruition will end when saturation of data is attained. The interviews will be anonymously transcribed for analysis. According to the research question, coding of text sequences will lead to hypotheses.
