Brief Summary in Lay Language

Mental practice is an effective means of performance enhancement. One special form of mental practice is rehearsal while dreaming. In a lucid dream one is aware of dreaming. Tasks planned prior to sleeping can be carried out intentionally in that state. Anecdotal reports and one qualitative study show that it is possible to do sports in lucid dreams and that this can lead to a subjectively improved waking performance. To this day, it could only be shown in one pilot field study that practice of an aiming task in lucid dreams can be beneficial. It is the objective of this study to replicate these findings in a controlled sleep laboratory setting, using a pre- post test control group design with the three conditions: lucid dream motor practice, physical practice and no practice.

Brief Summary in Scientific Language

As in the study by Erlacher & Schredl (2010) a pre-post design will be used to
replicate the effect found in that field study. The task will also be a coordination/
aiming task: a variation of the Outdoor game Kubb, where a wooden peg has to be
thrown in a way to knock off wooden pegs from their bases. To objectify the results, a
control group design will be used (lucid dream practice, physical practice, no
practice) and the pre and post test as well as the different practice conditions will be
performed supervised in a sleep laboratory. This way not only the tests can be
controlled, but participants will be asked to mark the beginning and end of the task
with eye signals in order to wake them up directly from their dream.

Primary Outcome

Difference in Motor task performance in the morning compared to the task performance in the evening (increment). Dart throws were performed and the mean of the distances to the center will be computed.
