start of 1:1-Block public summary

Brief Summary in Lay Language

The aim of the present study is the investigation of a potential link between Internet use (in particular Internet addiction) and individual differences in the structure/functionality of the human brain. This research question has been investigated mainly in Asia until now and is of great importance to better understand the biological basis of this potential new addiction. In Europe also rising Internet use can be observed, studies investigating problematic internet use with neuroscientific approaches are still scarce.

Brief Summary in Scientific Language

The planned study uses both structural and functional MRI to investigate differences between Internet addicts and control persons. To better understand potential differences also molecular genetics and neuropsychological tests will be included in the study design.

Interventions/Observational Groups

  •   Internet addicts partipate in an structural/functional MRI and provide a DNA sample. In addition, they participate in a short computer experiment (IOWA gambling), which reflects decision making processes and reward.
  •   Control persons partipate in an structural/functional MRI and provide a DNA sample. In addition, they participate in a short computer experiment (IOWA gambling), which reflects decision making processes and reward.

start of 1:1-Block primary endpoint

Primary Outcome

The outcome of the study is to replicate the finding that lower ACC and insula volumes can be observed in internet addicts. The aim of the study will be reached, when N = 30 participants in the group of internet addicts and controls (until the end of 2014) will be scanned.

start of 1:1-Block secondary endpoint

Secondary Outcome

A secondary outcome is to investigate the influence of dopaminergic genetic variants on the brain structure of Internet addicts and control persons.
