Brief Summary in Lay Language

The study focuses on communication difficulties between people with dementia and their primary caregivers. Caregivers will receive individual communication training – at first in a small group of 4 to 6 caregivers, later they receive training as individual counseling. In control group caregiver burden will be measured at three measuring points. Peopleparticipating in control group first can attend communication training at a later point of time at their own request. The objective of this study is to provide knowledge about strategies for the communication with people suffering from dementia and also to reduce subjective caregiver burden.

Brief Summary in Scientific Language

Difficulties in communication, which occur in patients suffering from dementia, are one important factor for high subjective caregiver burden. With a new individual based approach communicative competencies of caregiving family members will be strengthened and also caregiver burden should be reduced. Existing programmes mainly focus on specific communication strategies more than on caregiver burden. In this study both aspects will be combined.
The training will last 9 weeks. At first common themes of communication and dementia will be trained in a small group, after that each caregiving family member receives five meetings of individual counseling.
The objective of the study is to assess this individual based approach by measuring caregiver burden at three measuring points. It is hypothesized that an individual communication training will – despite improved knowledge about communication - also point out positive effects on caregiver burden. The target group of the project are caregiving family members of people suffering from dementia, who provide care at home.

Interventions/Observational Groups

  •   For nine weeks (one time per week) communication training will be given to caregiving family members of people with dementia (meeting 1 to 4 in small group setting lasting 2 hours at a time, meeting 5 to 9 individual counseling lasting 1 hour at a time). Caregiver burden will be collected with the BIZA-D inventory (Zank, Schacke, Leipold 2006) at three measuring points: before and after the training as well as three month after intervention. Additionally interviews about the training and its effects will be carried out.
  •   Caregiving family members of people with dementia will be asked to fill out BIZA-D questionnaire at three measuring points. They do not receive communication training. On their own request participation in the training at a later point of time will be possible (waiting control group).
