Brief Summary in Lay Language

The aim of this study is to describe the ventilatory regulation to exercise in breath hold divers and healthy non-diving subjects via cycle ergometry and measurement of breathing gases via breathing mask. Lactate measurement and blood gase analyses will be done as well. Aditionally we want to determine the influence of the diving reflex during exercise via cooling of the eyes` area. Three measurements will be done.

Brief Summary in Scientific Language

The aim of this study is to describe the kardiorespiratory regulation to exercise in breath hold divers and healthy non-diving subjects. Aditionally we want to determine the influence of the diving reflex during dynamic exercise. Spiroergometries with intra-breath breathing gase analyses, lactate measurements and blood gase analyses will be performed. The influence of the diving reflex during exercise will be determined via cooling of the eyes` area. Three measurements with different temperatures will be done. Eight breath hold divers and eight healthy non-diving subjects will be included.

Interventions/Observational Groups

  •   Breath hold divers, at least 4x/month apnea training; three spiroergometries with intra-breath breathing gase analyses, lactate measurements and blood gase analyses will be performed, cooling of the eyes` area with three different temperatures.
  •   Healthy non-diving subjects; three spiroergometries with intra-breath breathing gase analyses, lactate measurements and blood gase analyses will be performed, cooling of the eyes` area with three different temperatures.

Breath hold diver: at least 4 times per month breath hold diving training. Healthy non-diving subjects.
