Brief Summary in Lay Language

This study investigates how patients with Asperger´s Syndrome perceive and process language and time. It investigates particulary how patients with Asperger´s Syndrome process ambiguous information such as ambiguous words or ambiguous sentences compared to control persons. In addition, the study looks at the emotional and cognitive relevance of past and future experiences in that it examines whether these become more significant with temporal proximity (as is the case in normal controls) or whether they remain equally significant regardless.
All tests are performed at the computer or as a structured interview.

Brief Summary in Scientific Language

The study looks at 3 areas of information processing: the perception of time, the understanding of metaphors and the processing of ambiguities in sentence structure. The "autobiographical interview" (version of Shacter et al) is used in order to objectify the perception of time. It attempts to comprehend the episodic system as a phenomenological and neuronal unit, in which both recall of the past and imagination of the future occurs (constructive episodic simulation hypothesis). A well-established method for the acquisition of automatic processing of metaphors (Glucksberg et al) is employed. A visual-world-paradigm (Konieczny et al) is used to look at the processing of local coherences (plurivalent sentences).

Interventions/Observational Groups

  •   Tests carried out with patients with Asperger´s Syndrome: "Autobiographical interview". Aquisition of automatic processing of metaphors: A verfication/falsification task. A visual-world-paradigm is used to investigate the processing of local coherences (plurivalent sentences).
  •   Tests carried out with normal control persons: "Autobiographical interview". Aquisition of automatic processing of metaphors: A verfication/falsification task. A visual-world-paradigm is used to investigate the processing of local coherences (plurivalent sentences).
